The Great Plate

The Great Plate is a social enterprise that wants to improve the quality and impact of school meals across our communities. This will mean tastier, more nourishing food and using any profits to create community feasts and freezers for our communities.

As part of the Grace network, we are involved in several operations, but our day to day work is reimagining the way we feed children in primary schools.

Forest Green Community Cafe and Food Project

The café and food pantry are open to EVERYONE and to ALL ages. There are hot drinks, biscuits, breakfast items, cakes, crafts and good company!

The Food Pantry will be open and accessible to all – please ask a volunteer if you need support with food. There aren’t any criteria for using the food pantry, whether you work or not, have children or not, claim benefits or not, visit the café or not. There are no questions asked just support.

The café is PAYF (Pay As You Feel), and this wouldn’t be possible without the support of volunteers, Forest Green Rovers Community, grants from organisations, food donations from the public and local supermarkets.
Come in and say hello, enjoy a drink and a chat.

We are able to refer to Stroud foodbank, they also attend every Thursday as the address is also a distribution point.

Stroud District Launch

Our 3rd Launch in May was Stroud District and saw us reach the halfway mark of our district launches, and it did not disappoint with over 60 people in attendance. We were hosted by Trinity Rooms Community Hub and between their team and wider members of NOSH Stroud (Network of Stroud Hubs) we were extremely well looked after.

Our morning showcased the very best of partnership working and what can be achieved through working together and supporting each other. Our thanks go to Sarah from Trinity Rooms Community Hub for her insight and update on NOSH Stroud , Annie the NOSH Stroud food coordinator for highlighting the opportunities of working with local producers. Liz Godsell from Godsells Cheese providing the essential view from the farmer and Will from The Long Table to show how sourcing locally is mutually rewarding and beneficial. We also heard from Simone from The Keepers – Wotton Area Community Hub about all the work they are doing and how valuable Food Hubs are for their communities, then Emma Keating Clark of Stroud District Council spoke about how they are supporting this work across the district

Our thanks to those who were able to join us for this launch.

MHCG Gardening Group

Our Community Gardening Group has been going for nearly two years now and has turned a once neglected area into a thriving community garden, with herbs, peas, lettuces, strawberries and tomatoes all grown last year, as well as lots of wider planting and weeding around the estate.

We’ve built a few big raised beds and done a lot of prep work for this year. We’ve also planted a 100m native hedge alongside the road to increase local wildlife & reduce pollution with the support of our local councils and our next key step is finding someone to support & guide us with larger scale vegetable growing.

Once a month from March to November we have community action days on a Saturday, from 10am to 1pm followed by a free pot luck two course lunch.

Access: We exist to support & improve our Community. Initially set up & run by neighbours for neighbours, membership is limited by geography, but we accept & embrace wonderful volunteers from all over the Stroud area, who each bring something special to add to our community spaces.

Geographic Area: Middle of the Hill - which includes parts of Bisley Old Road & Summer Street, & all of Nouncells Cross & Middle Hill in Stroud.

Opening Days: Weekly on Friday. Once a month on a Saturday
Opening Times: Fri 10:00 - 12:00, Sat 10:00 - 13:00

Project Rules:
We don't use pesticides, we compost, we recycle wood etc where we can for projects & are definitely wildlife friendly.

Charging Basis: Free
